 Pediatric Surgery was started at Siddhi Memorial Hospital in August 2014 as a referral center. The 1st surgery performed was for duodenal atresia with annular pancreas, a congenital malformation diagnosed during pregnancy and was referred by an Obstetrician. The operation was done by Senior Consultant Pediatric Surgeon, Dr. Manoj Krishna Shrestha.  He is the pioneer surgeon for single stage transanalendorectal pull through surgery in neonates and infants for Hirschsprun’s disease in Nepal. In the past one and half decades, he has performed many complicated congenital anomaly surgeries in neonates successfully. He is regularly performing laparoscopic surgery for acute appendicitis, gallstone diseases, intussusceptions, infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis, intra-abdominal cysts, Meckel’s diverticulum, impalpable undescended testis, removal of nonfunctioning kidney, Hydronephrosis due to Pelviureteric Junction Obstruction (PUJO). 

  Till now, more than 700 cases of major and minor surgeries have been carried out including Pediatric Laparoscopic Surgery at Siddhi Memorial Hospital.

 Major surgeries carried out in neonates are

  • Esophageal atresia with tracheoesophageal fistula
  • Intestinal atresias (Duodenal atresia, jejunoileal atresia, colonic atresia)
  • Anorectal malformations
  • Hirschspring’s disease
  • Gastroschisis and omphalocele
  • Intestinal malrotation
  • Neonatal intestinal perforation
  • Congenital  diaphragmatic hernia
  • Congenital hydrocephalus

 Surgeries carried out in infants include

  • Infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (laparoscopic)
  • Intussusception (laparoscopic)
  • Inguinal hernias, hydrocele
  • Umbilical and Paraumbilical hernias
  • Undescended testes
  • Vesico- ureteric reflux
  • Hydronephrosis (laparoscopic)
  • Hypospadias

 Counselling is done for antenatally diagnosed fetal conditions like

  • Brain abnormalities (Congenital hydrocephalus, Choroid plexus cysts, Anencephaly)
  • Spina bifida (Meningomyeloceles)
  • Abdominal wall defects (Gastroschisis, omphalocele)
  • Duodenal atresia/ Anorectal malformation
  • Pyelectasis, hydronephrosis, hydroureteronephrosis
  • Posterior urethral valve
